Transcend today introduced the S5 memory card reader that only sports SD and MMC formats. Available in white, the S5 offers USB 2.0 connectivity and is capable of data transfer rates up to 480Mb/s. It also supports the latest SDHC standard for high-end large capacity memory cards.

Toshiba recalls portable DVD adapters

Toshiba’s U.S. subsidiary is recalling 142,000 AC adapters sold with the company’s portable DVD players, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced Tuesday. The adapters can fail, causing the portable DVD player to overheat and posing a burn hazard to consumers.

Sony BWU-200S Blu-ray Burner Reaches 4x Speeds

Sony unveiled its new Blu-ray burner, the BWU-200S, that can burn BD-R discs at 4x speeds. This new burner can also burn to BD-RE at 2x, DVD±R at 16x, dual-layer DVD±R at 8x, CD-R at 40x and CD-RW at 24x. The drive utilities a SATA interface and comes bundled with the CyberLink BD Solution software. You can grab this new Blu-ray burner for $600 next month.

Sony launches 40GB PS3 in Europe for €399

It’s official. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has just announced a new 40GB PS3 which will launch in Europe for the price of €399. It will be available starting October 10th. As predicted, the new model features two USB 2.0 ports rather than four and no longer includes the multi memory card port. Strangely, the model also loses backwards compatibility support for PS2 games.

Toshiba Shows Prototype High-Def to DVD recorder

On the very same day that the president of Matsushita Electric, the parent company of Panasonic, proclaimed at the CEATEC electronics show in Chiba that the format war for high-definition recorders was already over in Japan and customers there had already overwhelmingly chosen Blu-ray, Toshiba showed a prototype of an HD DVD recorder capable of burning up to two hours of 4 Mbps MPEG-4 high-definition video. That video is apparently being burned using a red laser — not blue — to an ordinary DVD-R, DVD-RW, or DVD-RAM disc.

AT&T Unveils Tilt Smartphone

AT&T today unveiled its first Windows Mobile 6-enabled smartphone, the Tilt. Named for its 2.8″ screen, which tilts like a laptop’s when slid up to reveal the handset’s full QWERTY keyboard.

Containing a host of powerful features, the device includes Wi-Fi with 802.11b and g frequencies, a 3-megapixel camera, the highest resolution yet for AT&T, Bluetooth 2.0, support for up to 32Gb microSD memory, and global 3G Capabilities from AT&T’s UMTS/HSDPA-based BroadbandConnect Network.

Samsung premieres 940UX monitor

Samsung Electronics America has announced the Samsung 940UX monitor, the first 19-inch flat-panel USB connected LCD monitor, claimed the company. The monitor supports UbiSync technology that allows multiple screens to connect via USB, rather than VGA, without the need for a graphics card or any special video hardware.

Each 940UX features an onboard video card and embedded software driver allowing for automatic installation on any Windows XP PC, eliminating inconveniences such as purchasing additional graphic cards and downloading separate drivers, pointed out the company. The monitor is suitable for users who need to add a second or third monitor to a notebook or PC, particularly PCs that lack space for an extra graphics card.
